The central government will file a review petition today against the Supreme Court’s order on the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes Act, 1989.
The Apex Court’s judgement ended immediate arrests in complaints filed under the SC/ST Act Provisions. Many BJP leaders and alliances approached the central government to challenge the Supreme Court’s order.
Last Week, Ravi Shankar Prasad- Union Law Minister shared that “I have already instructed the Ministry of Law over the desirability of filing a review and appropriate follow-up action”. He added that the government had taken note of the Supreme Court’s judgement laying down new norms as per the Act.
Modi Government has come under attack from Opposition demanding a review to undo the Supreme Court’s ruling.
The Apex Court had banned automatic arrests and registration of criminal cases under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes Act, 1989. It emphasized on holding a preliminary inquiry before taking any criminal action in this regard.
